It inhibits photosynthesis by reduction of carotenoid biosynthesis. It is a selective herbicide used in citrus, cotton, cranberries, nuts, pome fruits, soyabeans, stone fruirs. It is effective against many annual broad-leaved weeds at 1-4 kg a.i./ha; and also suppresses perennial grass and sedge species (Agropyron, Cynodon, Cyperus and Sorghum spp.). In soil 50% loss occurs in 21-28 d according to soil type and method of application. In plants a major metabolic pathway is N-demethylation.
